Functional Testing in Ruby With Hpricot, JavaScript, & Selenium

August 16, 2009

There are many testing frameworks. Which one is best for a particular purpose or application? What criteria should influence your decision?

Tim Camper, Greg Warren, & Dima Kovalenko will discuss the tools they used as they completed an app for a large US-based airline. Hands-on exercises are part of the meeting, so be prepared to write code!

Be sure to drop by Meetup.com to RSVP. Note: The Meetup RSVPs are given to building security so that they can print building passes. Please make sure your full name appears in Meetup.

Thank You Dave Giunta
Dave Giunta led a coding dojo for a group of engaged participants on Saturday. He’s also leading the Obtiva Coding Dojo at WindyCityRails. Dave, thanks for a very powerful learning experience! And thank you DeForest Group for providing a great place to meet!

Coding Dojo in Elmhurst

Coding Dojo: Part Deux – Practice Harder!
Deliberate practice over a long period of time is at the heart of attaining expertise. At this, our second coding dojo, we’ll be using RSpec, Cucumber and pair programming in concert to work through the Bowling Kata. Like last time, any skill level is welcome, though this time we plan to jump right into coding with very minimal setup.

For a head start, look for sites that discuss coding dojos and the Bowling Kata.

Be sure to drop by Meetup.com for details and to RSVP.

WindyCityRails
If you enjoy ChicagoRuby, consider WindyCityRails, a full-day conference with strong presenters & a big challenge: the Obtiva Coding Dojo. Last year’s conference sold out three weeks in advance. To secure your spot, register now.

When You Should Test Less

August 10, 2009

It’s best to create automated tests for all of your code all the time, right? Sometimes the answer is “no”.

WindyCityRails
As of this writing, we still have a few slots left in the 3-hour tutorials:

  • REST 101: Best Practices for Rails Applications by Jeff Cohen
  • BDD with RSpec and Cucumber by David Chelimsky

Drop by the registration site to secure your spot. See you at WindyCityRails!

Full Name & Security Ninjas

August 03, 2009

Security Ninjas
Hey Rubyists… before each meeting at the Aon building, we need to hand a list of attendees to the security ninjas. Therefore the name listed in Meetup needs to correspond roughly to the name on your photo ID or you are going to run into problems!

Please Use Your Full Name at Meetup.com
If you are using a first name or handle in Meetup.com, please change your username for future meetings. You’ll have an easier time with building security that way. Thanks!
