Obtiva TDD Bootcamp
…or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Testing
- by Matt Polito
Chief Craftsman Dave Hoover was able to lead this rag tag group of ruby troops
from the trenches this week, and we all made it back alive!
Bootcamp: Four Days of Rails
This week I get to spend some time down at Obtiva for
their TDD Bootcamp course. In a nut shell it’s a 4 day course to get yourself
bootstrapped before your app. The course seems to have been built around the
newish to ruby/rails and I will definitely recommend to that set. The class
size is small (we had a total of 6) which makes to experience a lot more
personalized.
Personalized Class Experience
That’s fine with me because I feel like I get more bang for my
buck that way. Speaking of bucks, the course price was a bit hard for me to
swallow but I finally just had to look at it as I am furthering my experience
and will easily make it back in career advancement. Plus, were else are you
going to get industry professionals to train you? There are not many opportunities
to get this sort of training.
Testing at Multiple Skill Level
So back to my recommendation… I mentioned that newish to ruby/rails should
look into this course. That’s not entirely true. I would consider myself an
intermediate rails operator in the field but unfortunately never got on the
testing bandwagon and I got a lot out of this week. Now I’ll also say that
group I was with also mostly not new to rails. Dave was cool enough to change
the curriculum to accommodate what we were looking for. Kudos to you, sir!
Surprise Visits
Overall it was a great experience! We even had some surprise visits…
Jake Scruggs (metric_fu) was on location
one day and yesterday the creator of Selenium,
Jason Huggins, stopped by. How cool is that.
Location
It’s not that often that I get to go into
Chicago so that was a treat too. Plus Obtiva has a
great office and location. It’s literally 12 hops,
4 skips, and 1.47 jumps away from Union Station!
