Agile & Ruby. Testing Less. Aug 4th, Downtown

July 24, 2009

Agile, Scrum, Extreme Programming, and Lean: What Does It Mean to Ruby?
Ruby helps you develop software quickly and adapt to fast-changing market conditions. But can your methodology accelerate your adaptability and development speed? Join Drew Jemilo, an Agile expert, and find out!

When You Should Test Less
Jake Scruggs has been on teams with way too little and (heresy) way too much testing. There have been lots of talks about how you should test more, but Jake is going to dare to talk about when you should test less. Too much testing can lead to backlash, gridlock, morale problems, and poor velocity. Of course lack of testing can lead to bad design, gridlock, morale problems, and poor velocity. Balance is key.

Date & Location
The meeting will be held Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at ThoughtWorks, 200 East Randolph (the Aon Building). Pizza and mingling will begin at 6pm. Presentations will start at 6:30pm. Be sure to visit Meetup.com to RSVP.

Cache Money and TruckerZoom

July 14, 2009

Cache Money via Remote
Our July 18 meeting will be a bold step for ChicagoRuby. Our presenter, Wolfram Arnold, is a Rails developer and agile consultant located in San Francisco. We will set up a remote connection with Wolf so that he can present at our meeting. If you are “poor” with model-based caching, stop by our meeting to learn more about Cache Money, which “is a write-through and read-through caching library for ActiveRecord.”

TruckerZoom Demo
During the second half of the meeting, Constantin Gavrilescu will give a presentation about his startup, TruckerZoom. Constantin will speak from experience to talk about some of the lessons learned. The topics will include multi-tenant applications, security with role-based authentication, access control using named scopes, working and staying motivated, and getting specifications from the client.

About Wolfram Arnold
[from http://www.rubyfocus.biz/foundation]
Wolfram Arnold, Ph.D. is a seasoned software professional with 17 years of experience, co-founder of 3 companies, and has been working on consumer web applications in Ruby-on-Rails since 2006.

About Constantin Gavrilescu
Constantin Gavrilescu has been working professionally with Ruby on Rails for 2.5 years. He first heard about it in a Slashdot comment 3 years ago. When he’s not programming in Ruby, he develops with C in Linux and does some Linux system administration.

Software Craftsmanship North America

July 08, 2009

Software Craftsmanship North America is all about mastering the craft of software development. The conference will be held Wednesday, August 26, 2009 in Chicago.

The list of SCNA presenters reads like Who’s Who of Software Jedi Knighthood. A few names from the list:

  • Robert C. Martin. “Uncle Bob” will tell us how to stay cool even when the schedule seems impossible, the requirements are ambiguous, distractions and meetings take all your time, and the sky is falling.
  • Dave Astels. Author of the blog post that sparked the RSpec project. His presentation: How to pursue your passion for programming and resist the pressure to move “up” into management.
  • Michael Feathers. Acting chair of the Codefest event at the last three OOPSLA conferences. His presentation will outline essential knowledge about our discipline that you don’t really pick up in apprenticeship.

Attendees who register before July 15th will only pay $99.00 for this full-day conference. Several members of ChicagoRuby have already registered. Hope to see you there!
